US in talks with the Taliban to exchange American citizens for Guantanamo prisoners in Afghanistan

A Guantanamo Bay slave allegedly a close associate of Osama bin Laden is apparently the subject of negotiations with the Taliban to switch three Americans detained in Afghanistan for him. According to The Wall Street Journal, the deals have been ongoing since at least July of last year and involve the exchange of alleged top Al Qaeda agent Muhammad Rahim as Afghani for American residents George Glezmann, Ryan Corbett, and Mahmoud Habibi, who were all detained in Afghanistan in 2022. After the White House proposed that switch in November, the Taliban counteroffered, asking for Rahim and two people in exchange for Glezmann and Corbett, the newspaper reported. Members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee informed the news that they were afterwards informed by national security director Jake Sullivan during a classified period on December 17, 2024 that Biden was still considering the offer. One participant added that during the conference, panel chair Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, expressed concern that the Taliban’s counteroffer wasn’t a good deal for the U. S.” The safety and security of Americans elsewhere is one of the Biden-Harris Administration’s best priorities, and we are working around the clock to maintain George, Ryan and Mahmoud’s healthy return”, Sean Savett, a National Security Council spokesman, just told The Wall Street Journal. This is a developing history. Kindly check again for updates.
